Wake asymmetry weakening in viscoelastic fluids: Numerical discovery and mechanism exploration

نویسندگان

چکیده

Viscoelasticity weakens the asymmetry of laminar shedding flow behind a blunt body in free domain. In present study, this finding is confirmed by four unsteady viscoelastic flows with asymmetric configuration, i.e., over an inclined flat plate various angles incidence, rotating circular cylinder, cylinder slip boundary distribution, and row eight equally closely spaced cylinders (which can be considered as single large body) through direct numerical simulation combined Peterlin approximation finitely extensible nonlinear elastic model. At high Weissenberg number, arc shape region stress, which similar to shock wave, forms frontal area body. This acts stationary shield separate into different regions. Thus, it seems that stream passes instead original As has symmetric feature, wake restores symmetry.

Annular flow of viscoelastic fluids: Analytical and numerical solutions

This work provides analytical and numerical solutions for the linear, quadratic and exponential Phan–Thien–Tanner (PTT) viscoelastic models, for axial and helical annular fully-developed flows under no slip and slip boundary conditions, the latter given by the linear and nonlinear Navier slip laws. The rheology of the three PTT model functions is discussed together with the influence of the sli...

Numerical simulation of a rising bubble in viscoelastic fluids

In this paper we discuss simulation techniques for a rising bubble in viscoelastic fluids via numerical methods based on high order FEM. A level set approach based on the work in [9] is used for interface tracking between the bubble and the surrounding fluid. The two matters obey the Newtonian and the Oldroyd-B constitutive law in the case of a viscoelastic fluid while the flow model is given b...

Undulatory swimming in viscoelastic fluids.

The effects of fluid elasticity on the swimming behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are experimentally investigated by tracking the nematode's motion and measuring the corresponding velocity fields. We find that fluid elasticity hinders self-propulsion. Compared to Newtonian solutions, fluid elasticity leads to up to 35% slower propulsion. Furthermore, self-propulsion decreases as e...

Beating patterns of filaments in viscoelastic fluids.

Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and beating patterns of elastic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which is actuated at one end and an active filament with bending forces arising from internal motor...

Alignment of particles in sheared viscoelastic fluids.

We investigate the shear-induced structure formation of colloidal particles dissolved in non-Newtonian fluids by means of computer simulations. The two investigated visco-elastic fluids are a semi-dilute polymer solution and a worm-like micellar solution. Both shear-thinning fluids contain long flexible chains whose entanglements appear and disappear continually as a result of Brownian motion a...
